TSL #018: Simplicity Is Everything

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” -Leonardo Da Vinci

I love simplifying complicated things.

I’ve learned during my professional career that things tend to get unnecessarily complicated, driven by insecurity, ego, or plain old ignorance.

Early in my career, I used to think flexing my intelligence in every interaction was the secret to success.

Was I wrong.

It took me some time to realize that genuine relationships built on trust and connection were the real game-changers.

Some of my most successful deals were sealed over casual conversations, sipping drinks, and talking about family, sports, and movies.

Authenticity and empathy turned out to be the secret sauce for fruitful business relationships.

To keep in this mindset, I conduct what I like to call the "simple audit" at least twice a year. One of the audits takes place during an August vacation on the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan with my family.

It’s in the early mornings on the beach, watching the waves roll in, that I take a deep dive into evaluating my business and personal growth.

During those moments as the sun rises, I think: how can I distill my business and relationships to their simplest, purest form?

How can I embrace Da Vinci's wisdom and thoughtfully reduce complexity without stripping away its essence?

Simplicity isn't about removing every speck of complexity. It's about skillfully simplifying, honing in on what truly matters.

Here's to a week filled with fulfillment, joy, and the beauty of simplicity.
