TSL #016: Defeating the Creative Cliff Illusion
From the moment I had the initial idea for Ultimate Hoops to the actual launch of the company was almost a decade.
Let me take you back to where it all began - competing in a corporate recreational basketball league in New York City while working as a marketing executive for Discovery Networks. I was sweating it out on the court with my Discovery teammates, but something was missing.
The recreational leagues I played in failed to capture what it feels like to be an NBA player since childhood. My dreams of NBA stardom were now haunting me.
That idea lingered in my mind, swirling around like a basketball spinning on a fingertip, until one day, I decided to take the leap. So, in 2006, I officially launched Ultimate Hoops, Inc.
But let me tell you, those years of cognitive development were no walk in the park. I filled countless journal pages with notes and sketches, envisioning how the Ultimate Hoops League would revolutionize recreational sports. Each new sketch and idea moved the business along, gradually shaping it into the final concept we see today in Life Time locations across North America.
Ultimate Hoops is a testament that transforming a "eureka moment" into a fully-fledged business rarely happens overnight. However, during my journey from idea to realization, I encountered a formidable obstacle that could have easily derailed my progress: the Creative Cliff Illusion.
Last week, I shared my story with a client who hesitated to launch their sports business. They believed the moment had passed, fearing their idea had become stale during the 12-month delay. But unfortunately, they had fallen victim to the Creative Cliff Illusion, a cognitive bias that tricks us into thinking creativity declines over time instead of improving.
As a sports business consultant, I understand the impact the Creative Cliff Illusion can have on entrepreneurs like us. It sneaks in, sowing seeds of doubt, eroding our confidence, and delaying the realization of our dreams.
But here's the secret we must embrace: creativity is not a finite resource that diminishes over time. Instead, it's a bottomless wellspring of inspiration waiting to be tapped.
So how can we conquer this illusion and unleash our creative potential in the world of recreational sports business? I’ve learned a few strategies over my 17 years in this business that will reignite our creativity and propel our ideas forward.
Strategy 1: Embracing Diverse Perspectives
When we confine ourselves to the echo chamber of our industry, we limit our ability to see beyond the boundaries of what is considered "normal." It’s time to break free.
Seek input from individuals with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and skills outside the sports industry. I vividly remember sharing my idea for Ultimate Hoops with friends from unrelated fields, and their fresh perspectives opened up new realms of possibilities for our customer experience.
It was a game-changer, transforming Ultimate Hoops from a recreational league into a transformative journey where participants were treated like professional athletes. By expanding our horizons and drawing inspiration from unexpected sources, we can infuse our businesses with unique and unconventional ideas.
Strategy 2: Encouraging Continuous Learning and Growth
Ah, the delicate dance between researching and procrastinating on our business ideas.
Let me tell you; no magic research potion will make you 100% confident in your venture. Every entrepreneur must embrace the risk and take the leap.
When working with my clients, we strive to reach 80% of the business idea, crafting a robust operational and financial plan before setting sail. The remaining 20%? That's where the real adventure begins.
We use initial customer feedback as the wind in our sails, iterating and refining our ideas based on real-world experiences. By embracing this iterative approach, your recreational sports business will stay dynamic and innovative.
Don't let the Creative Cliff Illusion limit your creativity. Cultivate a culture of openness, seek inspiration from diverse sources, continue learning and growing, and never shy away from experimentation.
Together, we can propel ourselves off the cliff into a recreational sports business future filled with exciting possibilities. The world of recreational sports is waiting for our innovative ideas to take center stage.
